The willÂingÂness to be self expresÂsive is the very thing
that leads to insight.
And I use the word willÂingÂness intenÂtionÂally. It requires force of will to be self expresÂsive, as opposed to conÂductÂing your life by rote.
I’ve been thinkÂing lately about how conÂdiÂtioned we are. Let me quickly set a couÂple of paraÂmeÂters about this.
NorÂmal, MarÂginÂalÂized, and the Fringe
Let’s play folÂlow the leader!
NorÂmal might be thought of as our socialÂized self. AttemptÂing to be norÂmal is one, strong point on the polarÂity of self.
I’m conÂvinced that part of the socialÂizaÂtion project is to teach us to have amneÂsia, to not notice, the depth and breadth of our socialization.
Not only have webeen taught how to behave, think, and feel, but we’ve been set up to miss the fact that this is going on.
In Zen, this process is described as, “The fish does not notice the water it swims in.â€
The whole process of wakÂing up is about noticÂing.
It’s not about, necÂesÂsarÂily, rebelling against our socialÂizaÂtion. As a matÂter of fact, the kinds of rebelÂlion that most peoÂple go through are socially sancÂtioned. Teenage rebelÂlion, for examÂple, is “conÂtained†within the sysÂtem. In a sense, teenagers are simÂply exchangÂing one set of behavÂiors for another, marÂginÂalÂized set.

MarÂginÂalÂizaÂtion hapÂpens within the sysÂtem. When we look at the marÂginÂalÂized in any sociÂety, we see that memÂbers of the sociÂety someÂhow manÂage to work around, or walk around, the marÂginÂalÂized person.
It’s like what hapÂpens in big cities, as peoÂple pass panÂhanÂdlers. If you watch, you see that there are cerÂtain behavÂiors perÂformed over and over. A few give the panÂhanÂdlers money. OthÂers walk by and preÂtend the perÂson isn’t there. Some even go out of their way to move away from the panÂhanÂdler — across the street, or at least to move toward the curb. While it seems intensely perÂsonal, all of this is socially sanctioned.
If you observe, you see that this dance is not a ton difÂferÂent from eleÂvaÂtor behavÂior. You get on the eleÂvaÂtor, turn toward the door, and look up the numÂbers — no eye conÂtact, typÂiÂcally no conÂverÂsaÂtion, or only conÂverÂsaÂtion with peoÂple you know. If you don’t believe that this is socially conÂdiÂtioned behavÂior, the next time you’re on an eleÂvaÂtor with other peoÂple, turn and either face the back or side walls. See what happens.
What hapÂpens is that you’ve stepped outÂside of the allowed behavÂior for elevators.
You’ve even moved beyond marÂginÂalÂizaÂtion. SomeÂwhere, out there, is the realm of, “This does not fit in.†Now, there’s no quesÂtion that the other peoÂple in the eleÂvaÂtor will figÂure out a way to adjust to the way you’re standÂing. HowÂever, if you allow yourÂself to pay attenÂtion, you’ll see all sorts of signs of their disÂcomÂfort. And, because this expeÂriÂence is likely “one off†— in other words, someÂthing that isn’t hapÂpenÂing regÂuÂlarly, the adapÂtaÂtion will only last as long as the eleÂvaÂtor ride does. It does not get incorÂpoÂrated into “the norm.â€
You might say then, that behavÂior designed to be disÂrupÂtive or simÂply strange (think weird fashÂions, protest marches, generation-based lanÂguage, etc.) if it is deemed harmÂless, is incorÂpoÂrated into society’s defÂiÂnÂiÂtion of “out there but acceptable.â€
You feel a bit of disÂcomÂfort when you first conÂfront the behavÂior, and then you “let it in.†All of this is hapÂpenÂing outÂside of your conÂsciousÂness. Until you choose to notice!
The Fringe is my take on the term fringe dwellers, which comes from StuÂart Wilde. Wilde is a semi famous Taoist. I’ve been readÂing and appreÂciÂatÂing his stuff for decades. He is responÂsiÂble for one of the lines I quote a lot – “The way it is, is the way it is.†He calls the peoÂple who awaken, who “get it,†fringe dwellers. I susÂpect he means the same thing that Saint Paul did when he wrote about “being in the world but not of the world.â€
In other words, the perÂson has learned the tools and techÂniques for operÂatÂing within the culÂture, while not buyÂing into the siren song of the culture.
We might, then, say that wakÂing up and being self expresÂsive means that you notice, or become aware of, the mindÂless numbÂness that comes from not payÂing attenÂtion.
From an interÂnal perÂspecÂtive, this means that you are capaÂble of seeÂing through the game. EmphatÂiÂcally, what this does not mean is that you become pain-free, or othÂerÂworldly, or bounce around in a state of relentÂless hapÂpiÂness. You become aware of the way things are, you become aware of your emoÂtions, and you put no judgÂment or restricÂtions on any of it. The way it is, is the way it is.
Let’s use the present swine flu sitÂuÂaÂtion as an illusÂtraÂtion. First of all, notice the socialÂized, herd menÂtalÂity reacÂtion. Mostly, what you see is hyperÂbolic writÂing, an underÂlyÂing panic, and the famous demand, “They need to do someÂthing about this!†They, meanÂing the govÂernÂment, the medÂical estabÂlishÂment, the drug comÂpaÂnies — someÂone — to make the thing all betÂter, so that the herd can go back to grazÂing. Now, I’m not sayÂing that the awake posiÂtion is to ignore the sitÂuÂaÂtion. The awake perÂson asks,
“What, exactly, is going on right now, and what can I do to maxÂiÂmize my chances of avoidÂing the swine flu, should it actuÂally amount to something?â€
At the end of the day, all that you can do is what you, perÂsonÂally, choose to do. PanÂickÂing, getÂting upset, stompÂing your feet, demandÂing that “they†do someÂthing — all are behavÂiors that fit with what you have been trained to do — panic, then look outÂside of yourÂself for resÂcue.
The awake perÂson knows that all you can ever deal with is what is actuÂally hapÂpenÂing. As of April 29th, for the vast, vast majorÂity of us, right now, nothÂing is hapÂpenÂing. Good diet, good hygiene, some vitÂaÂmins, reducÂing your stress — these are the things you can do right now–things that are good for you anyÂway. And if swine flu turns into someÂthing bigÂger, all each of us can do, indiÂvidÂuÂally, is to look after ourÂselves as best we can. AnnoyÂing yourÂself over this does not change the sitÂuÂaÂtion. The way it is, is the way it is, until it isn’t.
This is not nihilism
Nor is it denial. What it is, is simÂple accepÂtance. It is simÂple, because it lacks drama — it lacks panic, game playÂing, and demands. It is livÂing by using self responÂsiÂble insight. It is accepÂtance, because wishÂing someÂthing wasn’t hapÂpenÂing, or screamÂing “It’s not fair!†changes nothing.
Once I accept, simÂply, what is, I free myself to act.
You might say that insight means seeÂing into. The oppoÂsite, obviÂously, is outÂsight, a word that doesn’t even exist. And yet, outÂsight is the norm. OutÂsight is what the top part of this artiÂcle is all about. OutÂsight places your point of refÂerÂence, outÂside of yourÂself — lookÂing to the field, to othÂers, to define yourÂself and your behavÂior. CenÂterÂing — insight brings everyÂthing both into your own awareÂness and under your own responsibility.
Fringe dwellers operÂate from insight
If you don’t underÂstand that total self responÂsiÂbilÂity is a charÂacÂterÂisÂtic of the fringe, you just don’t get it. Insight means masÂterÂing the abilÂity to know yourÂself. KnowÂing yourÂself requires askÂing the question,
“What, specifÂiÂcally, is going on for me right now, and what, specifÂiÂcally, can I do to move in a direcÂtion I choose to move in?â€
The answer you come up with is yours, and yours alone. OthÂers on the same path may resÂonate with what is going on for you, or with your deciÂsion, but basiÂcally, this is about landÂing in yourÂself and stayÂing there.
The sixth Chakra (the third eye Chakra) is the home to insight, self-awareness, and intuition.

The kicker here is that we are all intuÂitive. We all have a sense of the truth of the matÂter — of what is. The path of intuÂition is that of accepÂtance of the totalÂity of our expeÂriÂence.
We use the expresÂsion “gut feelÂing†to describe an aspect of intuÂition, for examÂple. What this really means is that we sense in our bodÂies what we ought to be doing. In all my years of counÂselling, I’ve never met anyÂone who was totally surÂprised by the results of their choices. They all had a sense that their dumb behavÂior was going to head south, and rapidly, and they did it anyÂway — usuÂally thinkÂing that they were so speÂcial that they ought to get away with the dumb behavÂior. Being bit on the ass often brings peoÂple runÂning into therÂapy.
SociÂety hates intuÂition and insight
It has to. IntuÂition and insight often lead us to act, to be, difÂferÂent from the norm — and sociÂety is all about conÂformÂing. Fringe dwellers get the joke. They wear a butÂton that reads, “Run, LemÂmings, Run!†If the hudÂdled masses want to run off in panic, or sit down in the midÂdle of a huge pity party, fringe dwellers simÂply walk rapidly in the oppoÂsite direcÂtion. No matÂter what they expeÂriÂence, they immeÂdiÂately ask the quesÂtion, “What’s really going on here?†They dig deeper. They realÂize that they’re always going to have a socialÂized reacÂtion to what’s going on, but have no investÂment in actuÂally doing what sociÂety dictates.
When you see through things, leavÂing your mind and your body open to the posÂsiÂbilÂity of someÂthing new emergÂing, someÂthing new emerges.
Insight requires payÂing attenÂtion, while havÂing a light touch. Insight requires payÂing attenÂtion to all of you — to body mind and spirit. Next week, we’ll look at ways to do this.
