There will be a free, one hour semÂiÂnar on WednesÂday, May 27, startÂing at 5 Pacific, 8 EastÂern time. There will be 4 addiÂtional one hour semÂiÂnars, on the folÂlowÂing 4 WednesÂdays, same time. You’ll learn the details on the May 27th call, but broadly, I’ll be disÂcussing the acronym NAIL–Noticing, AcceptÂing, InteÂgratÂing, and LetÂting Go.
Here’s the promo text for the event:
It has been said that life is 10% action and 90% reacÂtion. How are your reacÂtions in your life servÂing you?
This Could Be Your A-HA Moment

My New Book is Progressing
My new book, Half Asleep in the BudÂdha Hall, is out for review, and we still think we’ll have it availÂable in June, or the beginÂning of July at the latÂest. I’ve picked June 15 as a tarÂget date, but a lot depends on the reviewÂers. I want to include their comÂments in the book, and the turn around on that is a couÂple of weeks.

Today, I want to share the cover with you, and to thank DenÂnis (BooÂgie Jack) Gaskill for the design. DenÂnis is a friend—we’ve writÂten back and forth for a couÂple of years, he’s read my stuff, and has always been genÂerÂous with comÂments and sugÂgesÂtions. I hapÂpened to menÂtion the new book to him, and he offered to work up some cover designs. He donated his time and serÂvices, and I’m so grateÂful. It’s a great cover!
To whet your appetite, here’s the Intro of the new book. I’ll be postÂing samÂple secÂtions over the next few weeks, too!
IntroÂducÂtion
Back in 2005, my book, This EndÂless Moment, was pubÂlished. Fairly quickly after that, I thought about writÂing the next one. In This EndÂless Moment, I wrote from a WestÂern perÂspecÂtive about sevÂeral core conÂcepts that related to simÂple presÂence and livÂing. In this book, I am playÂing around with EastÂern views of these same concepts.
I want to encourÂage you to step back from WestÂern culÂture and belief sysÂtems, for no parÂticÂuÂlar reaÂson other than to give you a chance to air out your mind. This is meant to be like walkÂing around a statue. The front and the back may seem difÂferÂent, but it is the same statue, seen from a difÂferÂent perspective.
UltiÂmately, my wish is that you expand your reperÂtoire regard-ing how you choose to view, underÂstand, and live your life. This book will sugÂgest a moment-by-moment path to deeper, commit-ted, and purÂposeÂful living.
While you will see Zen stoÂries, quotes from the Tao Te Ching, core BudÂdhist teachÂings, and mateÂrÂial from the Bhagavad-Gita, this is not a Zen, Taoist, Hindu, or BudÂdhist sales pitch. I am not declarÂing what you are readÂing to be right, or corÂrect. What I do know is that I have tested the conÂcepts that I write about, and have found them to be ‘so’ in my own life. I write, as always, from the class-room of my own experience.
I invite you to join me, to evalÂuÂate what you read with a critÂiÂcal eye, and to experÂiÂment with the conÂcepts preÂsented. The BudÂdha said,
“Believe nothÂing, no matÂter where you read it, or who said it, no matÂter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reaÂson and your own comÂmon sense.â€
In this book, my overÂarÂchÂing frameÂwork is the Zen perÂspecÂtive. I have made use of old, old Zen stoÂries, as well as new Zen tales that come from my expeÂriÂence with life, with DarÂbella, with famÂily, friends, and clients. If you are new to these EastÂern stoÂries, you might at first strugÂgle with makÂing sense of the plot or point. If you are familÂiar with some of the stoÂries, you may find your interÂpreÂtaÂtion of the story’s meanÂing difÂfers from mine. In either case, hold what you read lightly, letÂting thoughts play in the depths of your mind and heart. I claim no authorÂity over meanings—this book is simÂply a light-hearted inviÂtaÂtion to loosen your grip on your interÂpreÂtaÂtions, thoughts, and actions.
We can disÂcover the essence of Zen in the pracÂtice of medÂiÂtaÂtion (zazen) and conÂtemÂplaÂtion (effortÂful mindÂfulÂness, or conÂcenÂtraÂtion.) In the stillÂness that arises, our norÂmal busyÂness, analyÂsis, and ‘monkey-mind’ (jumpÂing from one thought to another) can fade into the backÂground, as another, perÂhaps more interÂestÂing essence floats to the surÂface. In this empty stillÂness is great depth, insight, and wisÂdom, none of which has much to do with thinkÂing, reaÂsonÂing, or being ‘wise.’ We disÂcover the realm of simÂple presÂence in the endÂless flow of Now.
This realm is where the mysÂtery of us—of we ‘mere humans’—becomes less cloudy. As we bring ourÂselves into the disÂciÂpline of stillÂness and EmptiÂness, our draÂmas, excuses, evaÂsions, and lack of integrity begins to disÂsiÂpate. We find ourÂselves, findÂing ourÂselves. ParaÂdoxÂiÂcally, our findÂing reveals that there is no one, anyÂwhere, to find.
In the Tao, we read, “If you mould a cup you have to make a holÂlow; it is the EmptiÂness within it that makes it useÂful.â€Â This conÂcept of lookÂing into EmptiÂness is a forÂeign one in the West, where exterÂnals, looks, posÂsesÂsions, and scoreÂcards of varÂiÂous forms and stripes are the way we define ourÂselves. Yet, if we are to progress, look we must—into the EmptiÂness that gives form meaning.
Walk with me, then, into the depths of life, into the heights of who we are, and into the swirl and flow of the chi of life. In the stillÂness, there is both peace and presence.
This book is divided into sections.
In the First SecÂtion, we have a look at Zen livÂing as it is reflect-ed in TraÂdiÂtional Zen StoÂries. What I write is not intended to be seen as the only, sinÂgle, or even corÂrect explaÂnaÂtion of each story. Rather, I am sharÂing what arose for me as I related to the story.
In the SecÂond SecÂtion, I present some Zen stoÂries of my own, comÂplete with hints as to their meanÂing for me. I urge you to read them and conÂcoct your own meaning.
In the Third SecÂtion, I present for your conÂsidÂerÂaÂtion the utterÂings of a 20th cenÂtury Zen MasÂter, Yogi Berra.
In the Fourth SecÂtion, we explore livÂing in a new way, as we re-late in openÂness, clarÂity, and integrity.
Enjoy.
Lastly, Here’s a Call for Suggestions
I’ve had sevÂeral requests for relaÂtionÂship help, in the form of a new book. I’ve been playÂing around with this, tryÂing out forÂmats in my head. A couÂple of days ago, I thought, “Why not ask readÂers for relaÂtionÂship questions?â€
I’m thinkÂing that the book could be in quesÂtion / answer forÂmat, and the topÂics could be about anyÂthing relaÂtional – comÂmuÂniÂcaÂtion, sexÂuÂalÂity and senÂsuÂalÂity, conÂflict manÂageÂment, keepÂing the relaÂtionÂship alive—whatever.
So, please, if you have ideas or quesÂtions that would fit this forÂmat, send them to me at wcallen (at) rogers (dot) com. You know how to turn that into a proper e-mail address. Or, use the form, here:
