Table of conÂÂtents for 4 ‘noble truths’
Just to say…
Thanks to everyÂÂone who dropped by our first ever Tele-seminar on beliefs and letÂÂting go of the things that do not work. Stay tuned  there are more to come! Here’s the page for viewÂÂing the resources for the call.
So, last week we talked about clingÂÂing, and how appealÂÂing it is to stay stuck. To recap, we looked at the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths, which I preÂÂfer to call the
4 DescripÂÂtors of the Way it Is.

The 4 DescripÂÂtors, havÂÂing a party…
SufÂÂferÂÂing,†for examÂÂple, is the first of the 4 DescripÂÂtorsdukkha, is really about the unsatÂÂisÂÂfacÂÂtory nature of life. Dukkha is comÂÂmonly used to describe a range of feelÂÂing, from unease to suffering., and is a transÂÂlaÂÂtion that is aproÂÂpos of the 1800s. The actual Pali word that is transÂÂlated as sufÂÂferÂÂing, One of my online friends, Peter Hoban, comÂÂmented about the blog post, and his comÂÂment reminded me to menÂÂtion that many of the BudÂÂdhist texts were transÂÂlated in the late 1800s. “Life is
Peter’s point is accuÂÂrate. SufÂÂferÂÂing was a big deal to theÂÂoloÂÂgians and philosoÂÂphers 100 year or more ago. For us, not so much.
It’s the same with “Noble Truths.†I cerÂÂtainly don’t use the word “noble†in my daily speech. A betÂÂter transÂÂlaÂÂtion is “imporÂÂtant†or “preÂÂemÂÂiÂÂnent.†And “truth†does not capÂÂture the essence of the Pali word sacca, which really means, “to be.†It refers to someÂÂthing that is “right there, obvious.â€
Thus, my shiftÂÂing to 4 DescripÂÂtors of the Way it Is. Once you see them, they are “right there,†and oh so obvious.
For the next three artiÂÂcles, let’s look at the 4th descripÂÂtor, what is called the 8-fold Path.
Each of the 8 paths is typÂÂiÂÂcally prefÂÂaced with “Right,†as in Right View, Right VocaÂÂtion, etc. For purÂÂposes of our disÂÂcusÂÂsion, I’ll folÂÂlow Glenn WalÂÂlis (I’m using his ideas for this entire series, as conÂÂveyed in the book, Basic TeachÂÂings of the BudÂÂdha.) He notes the lanÂÂguage transÂÂlaÂÂtion issue, and sugÂÂgests that “Right†has the conÂÂtemÂÂpoÂÂrary meanÂÂing of “corÂÂrect,†as in right and wrong. He proÂÂposes using the word “sound,†as in “that which leads to the result we seek.†I agree. “Sound†it is!
The 8 can be put into three groups:
A look at understanding
This is what this blog focuses on. Many times we’ve menÂÂtioned how peoÂÂple operÂÂate out of a skewed view of how life is, and who they are. This view is embedÂÂded into our sub-conscious minds through the norÂÂmal growÂÂing up and learnÂÂing processâ€â€something I call the ego develÂÂopÂÂment project.
This project is absolutely necessaryâ€â€it is through this project that we self-identify, sepÂÂaÂÂrate from “mother,†and develop a sense of “me / not me.†It, howÂÂever, is the basic, first step in a lifeÂÂtime of exploÂÂration – in a sense, it’s someÂÂthing that proÂÂvides the conÂÂveÂÂnience of a name, but very litÂÂtle insight into “the way it is.â€

Most peoÂÂple, howÂÂever, stall right there, and spend the rest of their lives proÂÂtectÂÂing and defendÂÂing their ego idenÂÂtity, to the detriÂÂment of findÂÂing true conÂÂtentÂÂment and an eleÂÂgant way of being. This is not their fault. It’s pretty hard to move past a socially acceptÂÂable place of being, to someÂÂthing entirely difÂÂferÂÂent. In a sense, withÂÂout exterÂÂnal interÂÂvenÂÂtion, or another point of refÂÂerÂÂence, all we can expect is to be just like, or a litÂÂtle worse than, the social stanÂÂdard or norm.
Sound View
We could get into a long debate about what the alterÂÂnaÂÂtive to the culÂÂtural norm is. Again, I’ve been writÂÂing about this alterÂÂnaÂÂtive view since 1999, on this blog, and in my e-zine, Into the CenÂÂtre, before the blog. I have conÂÂsisÂÂtently pointed to a viewÂÂpoint that is non dual, self-responsible, and one in which I see myself as “that which is engagÂÂing with life.†I have the choice to live in my head, lost in thought, findÂÂing myself dwelling in the past or the future. Or, I can come into moment-by-moment presÂÂence, recÂÂogÂÂnizÂÂing that, by choosÂÂing to view life in this way, I have no perÂÂmaÂÂnent reality.
I am as I am, and then I become that which is,
in the next moment.
From this place of expanÂÂsiveÂÂness, I can choose. I can engage, or I can step back. I can let go, or I can embrace. I can shut down, or open up. NothÂÂing is right or wrong (the non dual part) and nothÂÂing is required, other than presÂÂence. I begin to see my life as a series of comÂÂings and goings, with no perÂÂmaÂÂnence to attach to. Things are as they are, and then they are someÂÂthing else.
This process of letÂÂting go (of non clingÂÂing) is
the key to the practice.
Our egos desÂÂperÂÂately want to be imporÂÂtant, and to eleÂÂvate everyÂÂthing we touch to speÂÂcial, unique, and imporÂÂtant. Our egos are excesÂÂsively invested in keepÂÂing the staÂÂtus quo, and remain a part of our ongoÂÂing expeÂÂriÂÂence until we die.
So, part of a sound view is tied up in how I see my ego.
I choose, then, to make peace with my ego, with my thoughts, with my emoÂÂtions and feelÂÂings, and with my body. In other words, I do not ignore, subÂÂliÂÂmate, beat down, or disÂÂparÂÂage any of the “stuff†that accomÂÂpaÂÂnies being alive in a body. Nor do I eleÂÂvate any of the stuff to the level of demi-god. I am alive and havÂÂing human experiencesâ€â€and all of it is just as it should be.
The key to movÂÂing past an old view to a new one is genÂÂtle accepÂÂtance of what is, and who I am, while breathÂÂing into who I am becoming.
Sound IncliÂÂnaÂÂtion
IncliÂÂnaÂÂtion and view are paired. If our view is that the world is unfair, we will be inclined to be untrustÂÂing. If we view the world as scary, we will be inclined to be timid and reserved. If my view is that the movies I am runÂÂning in my head are both “right and true,†my incliÂÂnaÂÂtion will be to look for eviÂÂdence that matches the film, and also to try to conÂÂvince or manipÂÂuÂÂlate othÂÂers into acceptÂÂing my view.
And on and on.

If our view shifts to “the way it is, is the way it is,†our incliÂÂnaÂÂtion will be to treat the world with open-eyed wonÂÂder and curiosÂÂity. With this incliÂÂnaÂÂtion, my eyes focus on what is before me to see. This includes thoughts which arise. I see “what is,†and I interÂÂact with it.
So, you might say that incliÂÂnaÂÂtion is about intenÂÂtion, and interaction.
In other words, it’s not enough to say that you have a new view. It’s not enough to comÂÂmit to folÂÂlowÂÂing that view.
What is required is that final step of actuÂÂally livÂÂing in harÂÂmony and coörÂÂdiÂÂnaÂÂtion with the view you espouse.
Most have difÂÂfiÂÂculty here. I say to clients, “I don’t care what you say you will do, or what you say you underÂÂstand. The only thing that matÂÂter is what you choose to do as you live your life.â€
In the folÂÂlowÂÂing secÂÂtions to this series, we’ll look at specifics for the “doing of our being.â€
