Dogen, masÂter of ‘just sitting’
So cease the intelÂlecÂtual work of studyÂing sayÂings and chasÂing words. Learn the backÂward step of turnÂing and reflectÂing light. Body and Mind natÂuÂrally drop off, and the origÂiÂnal face appears. If we want to attain the matÂter of the inefÂfaÂble, we should urgently pracÂtice the matÂter of the ineffable.
In genÂeral, a quiet room is good for Zen pracÂtice, and food and drink are taken in modÂerÂaÂtion. AbanÂdon all involveÂments. Give the myrÂiad things a rest. Do not think of good and bad. Do not care about right and wrong. Stop the driÂving moveÂment of Mind, will, conÂsciousÂness. Cease intelÂlecÂtual conÂsidÂerÂaÂtion through images, thoughts, and reflecÂtions. Do not aim to become a BudÂdha. How could it be conÂnected with sitÂting or lying down?

Zazen — the art of just sitting
The above quote is Mike Cross’ transÂlaÂtion of a porÂtion of MasÂter Dogen’s (19 JanÂuÂary 1200 – 22 SepÂtemÂber 1253) text on Zazen, “Rules of Sitting-Zen for EveryÂbody.†(Dogen was a JapanÂese Zen BudÂdhist teacher born in Kyoto, and the founder of the Soto school of Zen in Japan.)
Dogen is makÂing a point we think is essenÂtial. To use his words: “Body and Mind natÂuÂrally drop off, and the origÂiÂnal face appears.â€
Now, since this is Zen-speak, let me attempt an interpretation.
OrigÂiÂnal face — is all about what lies beneath who we (and the world) appear(s) to be. WithÂout “beneath†being a direcÂtion, of course. We might describe OrigÂiÂnal face as our essenÂtial nature, which gets obscured when our focus is on “things.â€
Body and Mind drop off — to see through to OrigÂiÂnal face, our bare attenÂtion must let go of our endÂless focus on “me.†Our stoÂries about live, and our deperÂsonÂalÂizaÂtion of our bodÂies cause us to spend our days lost in thought, as opposed to actuÂally living.
We talk a lot about dropÂping Mind.
This does not mean denÂiÂgrate Mind or elimÂiÂnate Mind. It means “let go of clingÂing to Mind.†Fritz Perls put it,
“Go out of your mind, and come to your senses.â€
Our tenÂdency is to equate thinkÂing with actuÂally livÂing. For examÂple, many are the clients who insist on the corÂrectÂness of their imagÂiÂnary, interÂnal stoÂries. They tell me, in graphic detail, that, for examÂple, they can’t change anyÂthing in their lives until they have “…thought things through, so as not to make a wrong decision.â€
To drop the Mind is to notice our tenÂdency to do just this, to make Mind games supeÂrior to livÂing. Or, as Dogen wrote,
“AbanÂdon all involveÂments. Give the myrÂiad things a rest. Do not think of good and bad. Do not care about right and wrong. Stop the driÂving moveÂment of Mind, will, conÂsciousÂness. Cease intelÂlecÂtual conÂsidÂerÂaÂtion through images, thoughts, and reflections.â€
DropÂping off the Body

We’ve been talkÂing about this for the last few weeks. Many peoÂple are also one step removed from their bodÂies. For examÂple, peoÂple will say, “I have a headache.†As if there is a thing, a headache, that one has, like one has a book, or a cup. “My head aches†is more accuÂrate. Or, “I am headachy.â€
SimÂiÂlarly, “He turns me on†is inacÂcuÂrate. “I turn me on†is so. “I’m so bored†is inacÂcuÂrate. “I am borÂing myself†is so.
LetÂting to body drop off means “stop talkÂing about your body (and your Mind!) as if they are someÂhow sepÂaÂrate from you.â€
Your body and your Mind are how you expeÂriÂence being. They are not “separate.â€
In a sense, we are sayÂing that thinkÂing about an expeÂriÂence and expeÂriÂencÂing are two difÂferÂent things. Mostly, we conÂtent ourÂselves with thinkÂing, wishÂing, and hopÂing. ExpeÂriÂencÂing, on the other hand, is close to our origÂiÂnal face.
How? By payÂing exquisÂite attenÂtion to what is hapÂpenÂing right now. In other words, to be lost in the expeÂriÂence of living.
When tastÂing, taste, when hearÂing, hear.
A client, the other day, described losÂing a box of CDs durÂing a move. I used his love of music to say,
“ThinkÂing, describÂing, judgÂing, this is backÂground noise. Reach in and turn down the volÂume. Then, open your senses to the music you choose to lisÂten to, and raise the volÂume, so you become lost in the music.â€
Because he loves music, he immeÂdiÂately knew what IÂ meant.
Lose yourÂself in your livÂing, and you will have found your illuÂsive origÂiÂnal face.
