the Seat of Passion
The other day I had occaÂsion to write to a friend about Integrity:
“What I say to clients is this: “What you say you believe is irrelÂeÂvant. What you do is who you are.â€
Now, integrity has a few meanÂings, two of which are,
and conÂsisÂtency of actions, valÂues, methÂods, meaÂsures, prinÂciÂples, expecÂtaÂtions, and outcome.
While my comÂment to my friend reflected the secÂond, I also meant the first.
The first defÂiÂnÂiÂtion has a lot to do with why I add bodyÂwork and medÂiÂtaÂtion to counÂselling with most of my clients. CounÂselling in genÂeral, and things in the West, are quite fracÂtured. We seem to be quite willÂing to engage the world only through our minds. We get caught in disÂtincÂtions and judgements.
We get lost up there.
No way out if you trap yourÂself in.
Now, the joke is that the first defÂiÂnÂiÂtion could also be applied to our our minds. ImagÂine a mind that was “undiÂvided or unbroÂken comÂpleteÂness or totalÂity with nothÂing wantÂing.â€
Wow. How Zen.
The probÂlem we have is not our minds. The probÂlem comes with how we use our minds. Minds are meant for data storÂage and probÂlem solvÂing. They are useÂless for rememÂberÂing the past and forÂtune telling about the future, as that’s nothÂing but the ficÂtion we creÂate to jusÂtify what we already believe.
Using Your Mind Completely
DarÂbella is teachÂing geomÂeÂtry to her stuÂdents at this point in the term. She and I were talkÂing one day, and she said, “I think I’ll ask a bonus quesÂtion: ‘Think of three ways to divide an angle in half.’†She was thinkÂing of mechanÂiÂcal methÂods, i.e. with a compass.
I closed my eyes, creÂated an acute angle in my mind, and overÂlaid a 30–60-90 triÂanÂgle. I then flipped the triÂanÂgle onto the other leg of the angle. I realÂized that where the oppoÂsite sides of the triÂanÂgle interÂsected, divided the angle. I tried it, in my mind, with an obtuse angle, with the same result, and also with a right angle.
I told Dar, and drew it. It worked.
She asked why. I didn’t know. (I supÂpose I could devise a proof…)
AnyÂway, that’s an eleÂgant use for a mind.
DecidÂing if my approach was the best, smartest, cleverÂest approach is not a good use.
Yet, 90% of the time that’s what we do, and we break the integrity of our minds in the process. I often sugÂgest to clients that they notice what’s going on up there—roles, charÂacÂters, parÂents, teachÂers, all natÂterÂing away, all with opinÂions. And here’s the joke—they are all ‘you,’ fracÂtured you, lecÂturÂing you, all seemÂingly “in there,†for no apparÂent reaÂson.
The ripÂples of the whole self
With undiÂvided or unbroÂken comÂpleteÂness or totalÂity with nothÂing wantÂing, the mind becomes still and focused, and able to ‘see.’ It can see the still water, the pebÂble, the splash and the ripÂples, as they occur. DesirÂing nothÂing, wantÂing nothÂing, the mind rests in what is.
So, you may say, “Yeah, but if no one wanted anyÂthing, “progress†would stop.†Nope.
Progress, art, design, livÂing fully—these are part of what I call the ‘pasÂsion sysÂtem.’ PasÂsion is an energy, a chi. PerÂhaps betÂter put, it is energy, it is chi.
In ChiÂnese thinkÂing, PasÂsion resides in the pelvis, along with that other famous pasÂsion, sex. Thus the lead image—referencing the seat of pasÂsion—pasÂsion for life is at home in the back pelvis.
PasÂsion is called “a burnÂing desire,†“intuÂition,†“imagination.â€
My desire to come up with a soluÂtion to the angle probÂlem led me to use my mind to do so.
EinÂstein said, variously,
“ImagÂiÂnaÂtion is more imporÂtant than knowlÂedge.â€
“RealÂity is merely an illuÂsion, albeit a very perÂsisÂtent one.â€
“The only real valuÂable thing is intuÂition.â€
“Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts.“
“I have no speÂcial talÂent. I am only pasÂsionÂately curious.â€
And,
“Only one who devotes himÂself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true masÂter. For this reaÂson masÂtery demands all of a person.â€
And one from one of my heroes, Anaïs Nin,
“I will not be just a tourist in the world of images, just watchÂing images passÂing by which I canÂnot live in, make love to, posÂsess as perÂmaÂnent sources of joy and ecstasy.â€
DefÂiÂnÂiÂtion #2 is essential,
and that’s what is capÂtured in the Nin quote. I typÂiÂcally use integrity in this sense—that what I say I do matches what I actuÂally do. This requires that I stop makÂing judgeÂments and excuses.
The only way we can move out of integrity is by comÂing up with either an excuse or an excepÂtion.
Excuses are pointÂers to “things out of my conÂtrol.†Like genetÂics, politÂiÂcal presÂsure, and the infaÂmous “everyÂone knows.â€
ExcepÂtions are accomÂplished by makÂing the present cirÂcumÂstance someÂthing speÂcial, as in,
“I know I said I would not yell at my kids, but this time she was so bad I just had to.â€
“I know I said I wouldn’t drink when I had a bad day, but this day was so bad I just had to drink.â€
And on and on.
Integrity based livÂing is doing what you say, with no excuses, while makÂing full use of all of you.
PasÂsion must be freed for any of this to work. PasÂsion driÂves us to creÂate, to invent, to dance, to sing, to engage with abandon.
A client the other day, in bodyÂwork, kept using the word “fluid†as the feelÂing that was arisÂing. MetaphorÂiÂcally and actuÂally. Another client, a long time ago, was an actor. She said, “When I act I feel all flowy.†I kind of liked that word.
Moist. Damp. Heated. DriÂven. EnamÂoured. ImpasÂsioned. Entwined. Intense. Flowy and fluid. The words and conÂcepts of pasÂsionÂate engageÂment in wholeness.
Stop makÂing excuses and excepÂtions. Plunge fully into the stream of your pasÂsion, engage your mind, and creÂate your masterpiece.
Now.
