Gentoo under testing

While I have spent just few weeks with Fedora 9, I decided that it is time to test another Linux distribution: Gentoo.

The reason why I opted for this distribution is because it is designed to be optimized for the user’s machine. That means that every time the user decides to install a program, through the “Package Manager”, instead of getting the precompiled binaries, he/she gets the source code that it will be automatically compiled for the targeted machine.

This procedure will make the actual installation slower, especially for big programs like OpenOffice, but it will have the benefit that the software will run much faster than the version compiled for a generic i386/i686/amd64.

Of course after the first two/three days necessary to set up the system, I will be back with a report.

Stay tuned!!!
