Video Recording With The Internet Tablet

Video Recording With The Internet Tablet

I just found an awesome little app on InternetTabletTalk that allows you to use the built-in webcam on the N800/N810 as a video recorder. It’s still quite buggy, with audio/video synchronization problems, but it still records, and quite nicely, considering it’s a VGA-quality camera. Apparently, I’m rather late to the game, as an OS2007 version has been around for a while, but it has only recently been updated for OS2008.

While you still cannot use the built-in camera for streaming video to sites such as Ustream or YouTube, this application offers quite a bit more functionality, and I would presume we’ll get updates rather quickly. The application also allows you to take a quick snapshot, and allows you to choose where it saves the resulting video file.

You can use this handy Install button to download it:

For those using an N800, you can prevent the Internet Call application from opening with the camera by going to Internet call -> Tools -> Settings and changing the setting there. Also, there is a sound issue that’s easily solved by using the included stereo headset’s microphone as a wired mic.

Resulting videos are stored in an .avi file format, though I was unable to get them to play back on my desktop using Winamp or Windows Media Player 11. On the tablet, Mplayer is able to open and play them. More to come on this soon.
