The Nokia N95 Revealed

The Nokia N95

The S60 rumour-mill has been going into overdrive this past week. Nokia really started to stir it up when they announced the Open-Studio event where they plan to announce their new N-Series range. The popular opinion on the net has been that Nokia will announce the Nokia N75, N83 and N95 at the event which is being held tomorrow (Tuesday 26th September) and the guys at AllAboutSymbian have managed to get the scoop on the first of these devices, the Nokia N95.Now some photos of the N95 had already been leaked onto the net but it wasn’t clear whether the dual-slide device pictured was the N83 or the N95 and it certainly didn’t reveal the specs that the device would have. Everyone was throwing out guesses left and right as they always do when info on a new device leaks without confirmed specs. The usual fanboy dream features were thrown around; Built-in GPS, 5 megapixel camera, autofocus, WiFi, HSDPA and anything else they could think of.

However the difference here is that they were all right. Yes, ALL of them! Here’s a quick guide to the unbelievable feature list that Nokia have packed into a device which is smaller then the N80 (Though the N95 is longer and wider than the N80 it is also alot thinner giving it an overall smaller volume):

Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 - First device to come with FP1 so expect FOTA upgrades and all the other good stuff.
5 Megapixel Camera with Carl Zeiss Lens - The best camera ever on any Nokia device. Lets hope they ironed out the camera bugs that plagued the N80
AutoFocus - The device has a 2-step autofocus, another first for Nokia. A great move when you consider Sony Ericsson autofocus on their devices since 2005
Quad Band GSM, WCDMA, HSDPA and WiFi - HSDPA support is yet another first for Nokia. It’s class 6 HSDPA which means you can probably download the internet in 5 minutes
GPS support built in - Do I need to tell you this is also a first? Comes with built in world maps and accurate to 10m
Improved Nokia Web Browser - The updated version of Nokia loved-and-hated KHTML based browser
64 MB Ram & 150MB of Internal Memory - Looks like Nokia have started to take notice of the S60 RAM “problem”.
TV-Out, 3.5mm Audio Jack, Flash Lite 2.0, DVD-Quality video capture, USB 2.0 connectivity….

This is by far the most complete device Nokia have ever released. It also marks the first time Nokia have gone all out to create a device which really tries to converge as many technologies as possible into one package. In the past S60 devices, though feature rich, never had all the features the S60 platform could support in a single device. More recently the N-Series devices have also has a central focus; The N91 was a Music-Phone, the N93 was a Camcorder-Phone and so on.

With the N95 Nokia have decided to just throw everything in there and give all the S60 fanboys the device they’ve always dreamed about. It certainly is the first S60 device in a while that has really got me wanting to head staight to the shops and, in my opinion, it’s the first to truely stake a claim to the title “Multimedia-Computer”. I’m sure it won’t be the last.
