CVS, Target, and Trash Pick’n

February 23, 2008 > 7 Comments

This was a good deal week for The Happy Housewife. On Sunday, I took my friend to CVS to show her how to work the deals with the ECB’s. After I made my purchases she chuckled at my $5 out of pocket total (which is actually a little high) and said, “I’m a believer!” Then the girl who was working the cash register said, “My mom does this too.”

Here is what I purchased at CVS (I would post a picture but most of these things were opened almost immediately after we arrived home)

Two Huggies Pull-Ups w/ coupon – $2/1
One pack Energizer Batteries w/coupon $1/1
Two packs Kotex w/ coupon $1/2
Two bottles Palmolive w/ coupon $1/2

My total after coupons and ECB’s was $5, plus I earned $15 in ECB’s, and converted my friend to shopping at CVS.

Then I headed to Target to stock up on the after Valentines Day
clearance deals.
I was able to get plates and napkins for my girls’ birthdays this week
and I also stocked up on sprinkles. I have a cookie frosting party every
year in December and I always spend a fortune on the decorations. This
year I am already stocked up and at 75% off the regular price.
I don’t have a Target total because I made two trips and also bought a
few non sale items as well. Everything was 50% to 75% off the regular price.

My best deal of the week by far were the free window panes my friend and
I picked out of the garbage. While we were on the falconry hunt we came
across tons of garbage in the open fields. We were joking that you could
furnish a small apartment with all the stuff people had dumped in this
place. Soon after that comment, we stumbled upon a large stack of
broken windows in wooden frames. Upon closer examination, we realized
that not all of the windows were broken, some were in perfect shape,
just dirty. We found three panes to take home. My friend plans on
cleaning them up, crackling the frame, and then using them for wall
decoration. My pane will be crackled in black and I plan on mounting my
black and white picture collection in a collage on the back side of the
glass.

I am a big believer in the saying “one man’s trash is another man’s
treasure,” some of my best finds over the years have been plucked from
the curb on bulk pick-up trash days.

Hello I love your site Your children are beautiful.
I have 3 of my own a 5 year old , a 4 year old and a 7 month old. life is great wonderful crazy etc.
I’m almost ambarass to say but One morning I took a trip to my local save a lot, I purchased some groceries my son was with me and of course the baby, my 5 year old was in school. It was about 9 or 10 in the am. After my purchase I walk past the dumster for the grocery I notice a box on the floor so out of curiosity I took a peek to my deligth a nice juicy fresh green pepper very large, I took a look around shamelessly I bend down and pick it up my son said mommy what are you doing? I told him, remenber he is only 4 years old. I look some more and found a bag fully closed of spice ham with experation expiring in a week, so I got that too I was very proud that I did this. It did not feel bad at all, they were delicious. I had a new found respect for the people who only eat and foung food out of the restaurant dumpsters, they have a name but I forgot it. I wish I knew someone like you I would go bargain hunt and search for perfectly good things at free or bargain. I’m a black woman from Haiti I guess because of slavery reason Black people have a huge complex about these things but not I. I would love to have a bargain partner in crime. I just wanted to share to this day. I’m proud that I found the items and your site.

Wow! I think I just made my big brake…never thought it would be about free dirty window panes from a field that put me there.:) I love your reader’s comments and thank God for a friend like you. I am overjoyed at seeing how He is at work in your life and blessing you through this! I will get to work on the frames, pronto!
