Frugal or Cheap?

Frugal Living Doesn’t Mean Sacrificing Quality

Sometimes people jump to the conclusion that frugal means cheap. I feel frugal living is about getting the most out of what you buy. Often that means staying away from the cheapest product and instead opting to actually spend more to get a product that will last longer. It took me a while to figure this out as I would often just buy the cheapest. But I finally realized the error of my ways when it only lasted a short time and I ended up spending more money in repair or replacement costs. This has definitely helped my wife and I survive on one income. Here a few examples.

~ Kid’s Furniture. – If new children’s furniture is incredibly affordable it will probably fall apart within a year and drive you crazy trying to close the drawers within 2 months! We spent a little more money a few years ago on furniture for our 6 year old son’s bedroom and he should be able to take it away to college with him. This is also when it is well worth the money to refinish or reupholster older, higher quality furniture.

~ Rowenta Iron. – This is my wife’s example of choice. Early in our marriage, she bought a cheap clothing iron thinking an iron is just an iron. Several burnt shirts and blouses later, she threw it away and bought a Rowenta Iron that will probably last us the rest of our lives. It works like it should every time and is very easy to use. Worth every penny.

~ Any Kind Of Tool. – I use to buy cheap no-name power and hand tools. Then I would spend all my time cursing at them and trying to get them to work how they are suppose to work. No more! These days I will spend a little extra to buy brands like Craftsmans and Ryobi. Not only do they save me time and frustration, but they should last a very long time.

When are the times in your life that you are willing to spend more money for higher quality products? Looking forward to your comments. Here are some online coupons that can hopefully help you save money on some quality products and brands.
