Raul H. Bustamante, born 12/01/1946 passed over on 11/30/2008 after fighting a 3 ½ year battle against esophageal cancer with determination, dignity and quiet grace. A 3rd generation Phoenician, Raul was the eldest of 6 children born to Raul and Georgia Bustamante. A 1964 graduate of Phoenix Union High School, Raul then obtained his bachelor’s degree from ASU before entering the United States Marine Corps. He attended flight school in Pensacola, Florida and became a CH53 “Jolly Green” helicopter pilot. Upon completing a year’s tour in Vietnam 1971-1972 where he was the recipient of a Bronze Star Device for 1st Air Medal and 27 Air/Strike and Navy Achievement Awards with Combat V, Raul finished his military career at the Yuma Air Station as a search & rescue pilot. He spent the next 29 years at Honeywell formerly Air Research and Garrett where he was a manager and recognized authority on government military contracts. Before retiring in 2001 he was the Manager of Aerospace Intellectual property. He was Chapter President of the National Estimating Society and Chapter President of Society of Cost Estimating and Analysis. He was also on the National Board of Directors for SCEA 1991. Even though Raul was a conscientious and dedicated employee, it should not be forgotten that at heart he was an entrepreneur. He opened a restaurant, obtained his real estate license and owned an insurance agency. After a few years of retirement he returned to the aviation industry at Standard Aero. Raul was the proud father of Matthew and Melissa with his first wife and friend Sheryl Lynn. He completed his family when he married Marion in 1980 and welcomed her daughter Renee as his own. He was the much beloved PoPo to Marissa, Nicholas and Jessica. Raul is survived by his parents Raul & Georgia and his wife Marion. He is also survived by his children Renee N. Lara James, son Matthew and daughter Melissa Kremp Bud, sister Francis Villalobos Henry, sister Lydia Mohr Paul, brother James Bustamante Sharon, sister Rose Jeffery Phil and brother Greg. He is also survived by too many nephews, nieces, and cousins to name. Raul’s joys in life were his family, his friends, travel and an intense love for the game of golf. A great thrill for him was playing the old course at St. Andrews, Scotland as well as courses in Wales, England, Portugal, and many courses around the U.S. He greatly enjoyed his visits to England where he was loved and appreciated by his wife’s family and the many friends he made while there. Raul will be remembered as a man of great integrity, a man who was constantly excited by the next “great idea” and above all a man who valued the ideals of the Marine Corps and the love of his family and many friends. Services will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 909 E. Washington St., on Monday, December 8th. Rosary will be at 10:00 A.M. with Visitation starting at 10:30 A.M. and Funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers the family is suggesting donations to be made to Hospice of the Valley. Margaret Ann Lowry 79, of Phoenix past away peacefully at home with family on November 30, 2008 . She was born February 23, 1929 in Phoenix, Az. Margaret was the wife of the late Arthur Lowry and the daughter of the late Tom Adams. Margaret retired from PBSW Office Supply Co. after many years. After retirement she called bingo and played when she could. Her passion was bowling which she did until she lost her battle with cancer. Her favorite past time was with her dear friends playing cards and Bunko.
She leaves behind her sister Rosalie Dressler of Scottsdale, sons David Downs of Phoenix, Michael Fredrickson of Surprise, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind 4 stepchildren; Judy Lowry, Janice Lowry-Gothold, Bob Lowry and Joanie Mogalian. Visitation will be from 11:00-12:00 noon, Friday, December 5, at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 East Indian School Road, Phoenix, with a Funeral Service at 12:00 noon. Genevieve Julie Varela Quinones, 77, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away November 28, 2008 peacefully. She was born January 3, 1931 in Scottsdale Arizona. Julie was the beloved wife of the late Ruben Quinones for 48 years and mother of the late Roberta Quinones. She was a member of the American Legion’s Women’s Auxiliary. She retired from Motorola after 21 years. She is survived by one sister Gloria Maldonado, brothers Joe J. Varela and Ernest Varela; son, Richard Quinones; grandchildren Charles, Regina, Ruben, Genevieve, Melissa, Frank, Rikki and Syriana; great-grandchildren Charles III, Julianna, Nadine, Roberta, Olivia, Noah, Mariah and Mary Jane. J. Patrick “Pat” Dugan, 72, died peacefully at his home on November 27, 2008 in the loving care of his family. Pat made the world a better place for having been in it. He was born in Indianapolis, IN on October 8, 1936, graduated from Cathedral High School, and then earned a BS in Accounting from the University of Notre Dame in 1958. He became a CPA, moving to New York City with Price Waterhouse. There he met his wife of 41 years, Carmen. Pat then worked as Treasurer for the 1968 Nixon Presidential Campaign. He was appointed CFO of Export Import Bank and they moved to Washington DC in 1969. In 1975, they moved to New York where Pat was CFO at Warner Communications. Pat and Carmen settled in Phoenix in 1982, where he held several CFO or CEO positions. He loved the desert, the sunsets and the proximity to the San Diego beaches. He served on several Fiesta Bowl Committees and was president of the Notre Dame Club of Phoenix. Pat was given the University of Notre Dame Award of the Year by the club in 1989 and he remained active in the club. This past spring he attended his 50th college reunion at his beloved alma mater. He is survived by his wife Carmen, their daughters Danielle John Kenney and Nicole Philip May, and three wonderful grandchildren, Caitlin, Sean, and Sara. There will be visitation at Whitney &Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd, on Thursday December 4 from 6-8pm. There will be a Memorial Mass on Friday December 5 at Brophy Chapel, 4701 N. Central Ave, at 3pm. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley or the Notre Dame Club of Phoenix.

Geraldine “Geri” Sharko, 71, of Paradise Valley, beloved wife, loving mother and grandmother, passed away November 27, 2008, after a courageous battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which was in remission for 22 years. Born June 25, 1937 in Chicago, she moved to the Valley in 1976 with her family. She was the daughter of Anne and Stanley Paluch, both deceased. Geri is survived by her husband of 47 wonderful years, Gregory, and their five children Greg Karen, Gail Bill Littleton, Gary, Glen and Gerard Tammy. She also is survived by her brother Gene Paluch Rosemary and their four children, Mark, Leane, Bill and Julie. She was the loving grandmother of Hillary, Jillian, Bill Gail, Kristin, Caroline Greg, Julia, Jacalyn Gerard.
In 1976, she and her husband established Sharko’s Food Service in Phoenix. As a teenager, Geri worked for three years at the Sisters of Mercy Hospital in Chicago, assisting disabled children. She was a contributor to several Phoenix area organizations, including Andre House, Maggie’s Place and Christ Child Society. She was a Eucharistic Adorer since 1987 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Scottsdale and a parishioner since 1976. Our Mom was an amazing person who touched the lives of so many people throughout her lifetime. She always thought of others, her family and the Lord — they meant everything to her. Mom will always be with us in our hearts and in our minds. Her spirit will live with us forever.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, from 1:00 – 8:00 P.M., with a Rosary at 6:30 P.M. Martha Ann Schabel, 90, passed away on November 24, 2008. Born in Hammond, Indiana and married to the late Joseph E. Schabel. She has been living in Phoenix, AZ since 1975. She was a member of Grace Community Church in Tempe, AZ. Murray Thomas Gibson, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on November 26, 2008. Born in Yankton, SD in 1928, he graduated from Yankton High School where he played as an all-state basketball player. He obtained his law degree from Stanford University and pursued his passion for the law as a corporate attorney in California and Chicago before bringing his expertise to St. Vincent De Paul’s Oznam Manor. He felt a deep commitment to his community at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, where he served as a lector, sacristan, Eucharastic Minister and usher. For over 16 years, Murray met weekly with his Cursillo group. He passed his love of reading on to his family and delighted in following his grandson, Colin’s high school and college basketball career. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lois and his daughters, Jane Willemsen and her husband Wayne of Walnut Creek, CA and Kate Lewis and her husband Nathan of Phoenix, AZ., as well as his grandsons, Colin Murray, Joshua Thomas and William Arthur. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joan Marie. After a courageous fight with cancer, Elina Bettinelli de Carrion, 74, beloved mother and grandmother and great friend to many, peacefully passed away in presence of her children. She left behind her friend and former husband, Dr. Carlos Alfredo Carrion, three children who loved and admired her dearly, Danny Carrion, Patty Ragsdale, and Alex Stark, the spouses Judy, Robert, and Rick, her grandchildren, Matthew, Caitlin, Andrea, Alexander, Nicholas, Elina. Elina was born on October 23, 1934 to Juan Carlos and Elina Bettinelli in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She graduated with the doctor of philosophy from the University of Buenos Aires. Throughout her life, she pursued her love of learning and teaching. She studied Art at the University of West Virginia and studied Linguistics at the Arizona State University. She taught many students of her love of her language. Our mother was known for being life of party; who loved to cook, was always laughing and having fun celebrating life. Her love for music and dancing. She will be remembered as a teacher, and an artist, who loved music. A blast to be around teacher. We would like to thank the people at St Joseph at Tower 6 and Neuro 5th floor, all doctors and staff treated our mother with such great dignity and respect. We will be forever grateful. Her last days were peaceful. We would also like to thank the Gardner House of the Hospice of the Valley for making our mother’s last days so peaceful. She knew how to live well, laugh often and love much. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, November 28, 2008, at Saint Francis Xavier Church, 4715 North Central Avenue.
