Kathleen “Kay” Keenan
81, passed away peacefully June 29, 2009. Born May 1, 1928 in Minneapolis, MN. Kay was raised by her parents in Minneapolis, and had 3 brothers and 1 sister. She graduated with a Bachelor of Art Degree in Education from the University of Minnesota, was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority, and worked at Dayton’s Dept. Store. While in college, she met and fell in love with William “Bill” Keenan. They married in 1951, and had 5 children. Upon graduation, Kay taught high school art in Minneapolis, and Bill earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. They were stationed in Newburg, NY and Metz, France. After honorable discharge from the Air Force, Kay and Bill returned to Minneapolis. Bill worked in the advertising industry, and Kay was a homemaker. In 1971, the family moved to Phoenix, where Bill held various marketing and management positions for Armour Foods Corp. Kay volunteered at Hopi Elementary, kept the kids busy with various art, community and sports activities, and worked part-time for Goldwater’s Department Store. Kay also taught religious education at St. Theresa Catholic Church, and served on its Liturgy Committee; she was well-known for the beautiful banners she created for the altar. In 1985, Bill’s employer, Armour Foods, was sold to the ConAgra Corp. in Nebraska, and they moved to Omaha. There, Kay began her passion for quilting, starting another artistic chapter in her life. Upon retirement from ConAgra, Kay and Bill returned to Phoenix in 1990. Since her return to Arizona, Kay kept busy creating her beautiful quilts, sewing, and working until the age of 75 in the Children’s Dept. at Dillard’s Dept. Store in Scottsdale. Kay is survived by her husband, Bill; daughter, Colleen John Wynne; son, Kevin Anne Keenan; son, Tim Lisa Keenan; daughter, Maureen Alex Vakula; daughter, Kara Theo Goldin; 17 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson. A Visitation will be held Monday, July 6, from 6-8 p.m., and a Rosary at 7 p.m., at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd. The Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, July 7, 10 a.m., at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 5045 E. Thomas Rd. Interment will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. Family has requested any donations in her name go to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 3877 N. 7th St., Suite 300, Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Margaret J. Barnes Crawford
90, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on June 28, 2009. She was born September 30, 1918 in Wichita, Kansas to Emory and Elizabeth Barnes. She graduated from Tuskegee University with a Bachelor degree in Health Physical Education and Recreation. While at Tuskegee, she was a member of the National Track and Field Championship Team creating a new world’s indoor record in the 440 yard relay. Tuskegee’s Athletic Hall of Fame elected her as a member for excellence in Basketball, Tennis and Track & Field. Her professional teaching career was interrupted when during World War II she joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and attained the rank of First Lieutenant commanding more than 300 enlisted women before being honorably discharged in l947. Margaret received her Master’s degree from the University of Michigan and taught at Delaware State Teacher’s College and later for 26 years in the Phoenix Elementary School District. In addition to teaching youngsters, she has sponsored students in the Arizona Jr. Olympics, participated in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Urban League, Association of Retired Teachers, Phoenix Tuskegee University Alumni Club, and the National United States Olympic Society. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles, sister Zora Lecompte and two brothers; Emory and Carl Barnes. She is survived by her brother, Carver Barnes and sisters-in-law Barbara Barnes, Sonia Barnes, Jan Barnes White and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A Memorial Celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 10:30 am, at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix.

Marianne W. Jones
passed away peacefully and with grace on June 27, 2009. She was born to Marie and Patrick Henry Waddill in Richmond, Virginia on September 30, 1924. Raised in her beloved Virginia with an endless passion for learning, Marianne graduated from Westhampton College now The University of Richmond. While there, she met her future husband, Fred C. Jones, who was attending Virginia Military Institute. They married in 1945 and moved to his hometown of Phoenix where they planted firm roots and raised their family. Although she never lost the devotion or love for her Southern roots, Marianne gave selflessly to many community services throughout her life in Phoenix. There was no one ever more dedicated to their faith, family or friends than Marianne – and she always made time to bring happiness and comfort to others. She possessed an infinite curiosity for life, and loved crossword puzzles, playing cards, cooking, traveling, the beach and Iron Springs. Marianne was preceded in death by her husband in 2007, and is survived by her children: Ann Latane Scardello Pete, Trish Waddill Padelford, and Frederick Graham Jones Tina. She also leaves a wonderful legacy to five grandchildren: Peter Kris, Stephen Katie, Patrick Jenna, Marie and Carrie Matt; and six great grandchildren: Lauren, Allison, Mia, Cross, Faith and Ashley. Thank you for all you have shown and given to us, Mom/Gammo… we will forever cherish and miss you! A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, July 7th at 10:30 AM at All Saints Episcopal Church, 6300 N. Central Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to The Board of Visitors, 1801 E. Cactus Wren Drive, Phoenix, 85020, or the Arizona Cancer Center/UAF for Breast Cancer Research, 1515 N. died Friday June 26, 2009 at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. Born November 22, 1952 to Marie and Owen Childress. A fifth generation Arizonan he attended Orangewood Grade school, Washington High School and Glendale Community College . During his senior year, Steve advanced to the Unlimited finals of the Arizona State High School Wrestling Tournament. Steve was employed by the Del E. Webb Corp. for 26 years. He transferred to their Las Vegas office in 1989 and was currently employed by Arizona Tile in Las Vegas. Survivors are his wife Eva, his parents Marie and Owen, son Martin, daughter Kennedy, son Matthew Toni, daughter Lisa David Olguin, brothers Kip pre-deceased and Paul, grandchildren Antonio, Molly, Mazie, Logan and Analicia, nieces Emily and Kimberly plus Aunt Helen Bud, the Aepli cousins, and his numerous lifelong friends. Funeral Service will be held at 12 noon, Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at the Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 East Indian School Road, Phoenix. A Celebration of Life Reception will follow the service.
